Lecture, Caffeine, & the Rain

July 6, 2012

This morning we listened to a lecture about the educational system in Mexico. In short, the lecture explained that educational system in Mexico is lacking. It was interesting that 15% of the population in schools is indigenous people and 6% of them don’t speak Spanish. When they are in school they do not receive any language services in their first language and no specific Spanish instruction either. They believe completely in immersion and it’s basically a “sink or swim” attitude for these students.

We enjoyed some free time walking around the city of Coatepec. It’s Mexico’s rainy season and it literally rains here everyday. In Xalapa it’s New York spring-like weather and extremely comfortable to walk around.

My cappuccino

Erin bought a hermonica and Sarah a guitar. They played some Bob Dylan and Bob Marley while I sipped my cappuccino and watched the rain.

  1. "sink or swim". I'm interested to know the success rate of these students. What indigenous languages are spoken in Mexico? Isn't one like something derived from the Mayans? LOVING MY CULTURAL EDUCATION from your blog!!! Loveeee your 2nd nerdy friend (Lauren being número uno).

  2. Thanks Erica. I guess I'm considered one of the stupid friends lol. Anyway, I want to know how they do with that method too. I guess it depends on what age they start school. I love the cafe scene. That is right up my alley! Xo
